Building a gaming PC vs buying one: which is actually better value?

Building a gaming PC vs buying one: which is actually better value?

Every teenager in the South West has had this argument with a parent, and both sides are partly right.

The money, honestly

The gap has narrowed. Large manufacturers buy components at volumes no individual can match, and at the budget end a pre-built machine is sometimes genuinely cheaper than the sum of its parts.

What the price tag hides is where they saved the money. It is very rarely the graphics card, because that is the number on the advert. It is usually:

  • The power supply. A cheap, unbranded PSU in an otherwise decent machine is the single most common corner cut, and the one most likely to take other components with it when it fails.
  • The motherboard. Often the cheapest board that will physically accept the processor, with no upgrade headroom and poor cooling for the components around the CPU.
  • Cooling. A poorly ventilated case means a machine that throttles under load — so you paid for performance you do not actually get.
  • RAM configuration. A single stick where two would be twice as fast.

Where building genuinely wins

  • You choose every part, so nothing is quietly compromised.
  • Upgrade path. A well-chosen motherboard and a generous power supply mean you can drop in a better graphics card in three years rather than replacing the whole machine.
  • Repairability. Standard parts, standard connectors, no proprietary nonsense.
  • No bloatware.

Where buying wins

  • One warranty for the whole machine. This is the big one. When you build it yourself and it will not boot, you own the problem — and diagnosing which of nine components is at fault, with no spares to swap in, is genuinely miserable.
  • It works today.
  • No risk of a £400 graphics card meeting a static-charged jumper.

The third option

There is a middle path that a lot of people do not consider: have someone build it for you, to your spec. You choose the components — or tell us the budget and the games, and we will choose them and explain why — and you get a machine assembled properly, cable-managed, stress-tested and covered by a warranty from a workshop you can actually walk into.

That is what our custom gaming PC builds are. And when something does go wrong in two years, the people who built it are twenty minutes down the road in Radstock, not on a support line.

A word on second-hand graphics cards

They can be a bargain and they can be a card that has spent three years running at full load. Buy from somewhere with a returns policy, and test it hard in the first fortnight.
